12 Todd Tackett

Todd Tackett was born August 22, 1979, and starred at Paintsville High School, where he became one of the most accomplished players of the program’s strongest era. Playing alongside J.R. VanHoose, Tackett helped Paintsville win the 1996 state championship and four consecutive 15th Region titles. He scored 2,082 points during his high school career, earned All-State recognition, and was also a talented baseball player who attracted professional interest before choosing basketball at Kentucky.

The 6-foot-2 guard appeared in 40 games for Kentucky during the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons, providing backcourt depth for Tubby Smith’s Wildcats. Tackett scored 34 career points with 23 rebounds and 14 assists, and he appeared in NCAA Tournament games during his freshman season. Knee problems eventually interrupted his career, and he underwent surgery before the 2000-01 season. Smith redshirted him that year, giving Tackett time to rebuild his strength, confidence and ballhandling while continuing to practice with the team.

Tackett’s best Kentucky scoring performances came during the 1999-2000 season, when he scored a career-high four points against UNC Asheville, Vanderbilt and Florida. He also logged a career-high 13 minutes against Indiana and recorded two assists in that game. During his redshirt season, Tackett remained determined to return and compete for a larger role, publicly dismissing rumors that he planned to transfer or leave basketball.

By August 2001, however, Tackett had reconsidered his future. With playing time expected to remain limited, he left Kentucky to pursue baseball full-time, returning to a sport in which he had shown considerable promise in high school. Tackett was later inducted into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame, recognition of a prep career that helped make Paintsville one of Kentucky’s standout programs of the 1990s.
