Tyler Ulis was born on January 5, 1996, in Southfield, Michigan.
Ulis attended Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where he earned recognition as a McDonald’s All-American in 2014. He was also named to the Jordan Brand Classic and received third-team USA Today All-American honors. His high school performance solidified his reputation as a top-tier point guard prospect. He was a two-time Illinois All-State selection and Southtown Star Player of the Year. He capped his career at Marian Catholic as the all-time leading scorer (2,335), leader in assists (578) and steals leader (283). Ulis averaged 23 points, 6.8 assists and 3.7 rebounds as a senior while leading Marian to 28 victories and its second-straight appearance in super sectionals.
Ulis committed to the University of Kentucky, where he played under head coach John Calipari. During his freshman year (2014–2015), he averaged 5.6 points and 3.6 assists per game, contributing to the Wildcats’ advancement to the Final Four. In his sophomore year (2015–2016), Ulis emerged as a standout player, averaging 17.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. He set a Kentucky single-season assist record with 246 assists and was named the SEC Player of the Year and SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Additionally, he received consensus first-team All-American honors and was the first Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year winner in school history.
Following his sophomore campaign, Ulis declared for the 2016 NBA Draft and was selected by the Phoenix Suns with the 34th overall pick. Over three seasons with the Suns and Chicago Bulls, he appeared in 133 games, averaging 7.5 points per game.
After retiring from professional basketball, Ulis transitioned into coaching.
