Wendell Lyons was born Wendell W. Lyons on December 17, 1952, in Louisville, Kentucky to Wardie and Mernie Flowers Lyons.

Lyons, a skinny 5-foot-2, played his first organized basketball for the 6th grade at Vine Grove Elementary School in Hardin County.  He grew to 5-7 in the summer and added 5 more inches by his freshman year.  As a senior at North Hardin High School, he averaged 26.5 points and 18.7 rebounds per game.  Lyons was named All-District twice and was named to most All-State teams.

On March 26, 1970, Lyons signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Kentucky. Assistant coaches Joe B. Hall and T.L. Pain were present at the signing. He joined Richard Drewitz, Ray Edelman, and Ronnie Lyons in that year’s recruiting class.

As a freshman, Lyons played in 13 games averaging 11.8 points for the frosh squad before being sidelined by mono.  He had two games where he had successive 16-rebound performances.  Coach Hall felt he needed some added maturity to bring more consistency to his game.

On Friday, December 31, 1971, it was reported that Lyons had quit the team after becoming disenchanted with sitting on the bench. At that point in his sophomore season, he had seen only two minutes of action. On January 21, 1972, it was reported that Lyons would use his remaining eligibility at Middle Tennessee State.
