Obituary – WILLIAM DOUGLAS KLEISER DIES AT 79 , Lexington Herald-Leader (February 29, 1988) by Staff

William Douglas Kleiser, former owner and operator of Lexington Granite Co., died yesterday at St. Joseph Hospital. He was 79.

Kleiser, of 2121 Nicholasville Road, owned the company for many years and sold it in the 1970s. Before moving to Lexington, he was the agriculture agent in Greenup and Owen counties. A 1932 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Kleiser was a member of the late Adolph Rupp’s first basketball team at UK.

He was a member of the Lexington Optimistic Club, Lexington Country Club and Lexington Salesman Club.

During World War II he was a lieutenant colonel in the Army.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie Louise Campbell Kleiser; a brother, R. Hite Kleiser of Centerville, Ohio; and a nephew.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday a W.R. Milward Mortuary — Broadway. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Walter Cornett, of Glendale, Kentucky, is the owner and operator of Walter’s Wildcat World. He founded WildcatWorld.com in 1998 making it one of the oldest Kentucky basketball fan sites in operation today.

On March 23, 1948, Adolph Rupp’s “Fabulous Five” wins UK’s first NCAA Championship, 58-42, over Baylor. The team is met in Lexington by 15,000 fans and given a parade on a fire truck.

 

On March 23, 2009, Patrick Patterson joined the 1,000-point club.  He did it in 58 games.

 

On March 23, 2014, Wichita State was 35-0, ranked No. 2 in the AP poll, and a legitimate threat to win the NCAA championship. Kentucky was 25-10.  In the NCAA Midwest Region third round and before 19,676 at the ScottradeCenter in St. Louis, freshmen Andrew Harrison (20 points), Aaron Harrison (19), Julius Randle (13 and 10 rebounds) and James Young (13, the go-ahead trey inside the 1:30 mark) shocked the Shockers, 78-76.
