For a heated rivalry that has spanned nearly a century and that has existed longer than the famed North Carolina–Duke matchups, the Kentucky Wildcats and the Louisville Cardinals will face off for only the 41st time on Saturday at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky for the Battle of the Bluegrass. The icing on the cake of this lengthy rivalry is the meeting between two fierce rivals Rick Pitino of Louisville and John Calipari of Kentucky.

On This Day in UK Basketball History

On February 18, 1903, State College (Kentucky) records its first win, an 11-10 decision over Lexington YMCA. The Wildcats finished that first season with a 1-2 record.

 

On February 18, 1909, with a 28-23 win over Cincinnati, Kentucky clinched its first winning season in school history. Following a “Senior Day” loss to Central University, the Wildcats ended the year with a 5-4 record.

 

On February 18, 1950, Bill Spivey scored 40 points against Georgia Tech.
