Former Kentucky star Rick Robey: “Physically, I Just Didn’t Have It Anymore”

Rick RobeyTell Me When It’s Over is an interview series in which we ask former athletes about the moment they knew their playing days were over. Today: former basketball player Rick Robey. Robey was a fourth-year senior when Kentucky beat Duke 94-88 on March 27, 1978, to win its first national championship in 20 years. Teammate and Most Outstanding Player Jack Givens scored 41, but Robey made the all-tourney team by putting up 20 with 11 rebounds.

On This Day in UK Basketball History

On February 14, 1938, Joe Hagan’s 48-foot shot with 12 seconds left lifts the Wildcats over Marquette, 35-33. Then-Kentucky governor A.B. “Happy” Chandler sprinted onto the playing court at the final buzzer and drove a nail into the floor to mark the spot from which “Hagan’s heave” was launched.

 

On February 14, 2009, Jodie Meeks scored 45 points at Arkansas.
