As we inch closer and closer to Big Blue Madness and the start of the 2012-13 season, buckle up for an onslaught of preseason honors for John Calipari’s Wildcats. We won’t be able to get to all of them on here — there are simply too many to keep track of — but since the Sporting News is first, we’ll mention Monday’s honors.  Continuing the annual high expectations for UK freshmen, forward Alex Poythress has been named a preseason second-team All-American by the Sporting News. Poythress was named to the second team along with UCLA’s Shabazz Muhammad, North Carolina State’s C.J. Leslie, Murray State’s Isaiah Canaan Missouri’s Michael Dixon. The first team includes Cody Zeller (Indiana), Doug McDermott (Creighton), James Michael McAdoo (North Carolina), Deshaun Thomas (Ohio State) and C.J. McCollum (Lehigh).

On This Day in UK Basketball History

On February 18, 1903, State College (Kentucky) records its first win, an 11-10 decision over Lexington YMCA. The Wildcats finished that first season with a 1-2 record.

 

On February 18, 1909, with a 28-23 win over Cincinnati, Kentucky clinched its first winning season in school history. Following a “Senior Day” loss to Central University, the Wildcats ended the year with a 5-4 record.

 

On February 18, 1950, Bill Spivey scored 40 points against Georgia Tech.
