Kentucky Slips Past Southern

Oscar Tshiebwe scored 23 points to help Kentucky top Southern 76-64 on Tuesday night for its seventh consecutive victory.

Oscar Tshiebwe scored 18 of his 23 points after halftime despite being in foul trouble, TyTy Washington Jr. added 14 points and both Wildcats keyed small runs to help No. 10 top Southern 76-64 on Tuesday night for its seventh consecutive victory.

Jayden Saddler had 18 points, Brion Whitley added 14 points and Tyrone Lyons 12 for Southern, which dropped its second consecutive game.

Playing for the first time in eight days, the Wildcats (7-1) went back and forth with the Jaguars (3-6) for much of the first half before taking the lead for good at 29-26 on Kellan Grady’s 3-pointer. It sparked an 8-0 run to put Kentucky up 38-34 at the break.

Tshiebwe sat for the final nine minutes of the first half with two fouls, but came back on the floor in the second half to lend six points and four rebounds to Kentucky’s 13-5 run for a 51-39 cushion.

On This Day in UK Basketball History

On March 25, 1978, No. 1 Kentucky defeated No. 5 Arkansas, 64-59, in the 1978 NCAA Final Four.  Lexington products Jack Givens (23 points) and James Lee (13) led UK past Arkansas’ famous “Triplets” — Ron Brewer (16 points), Marvin Delph (15) and Sidney Moncrief (13) — before 18,271 fans in the Checkerdome in St. Louis.

 

On March 25, 2011, freshman Brandon Knight missed seven of his first nine shots. Still, he knocked down his second game-winner of the postseason, a 15-footer with 5 seconds left to lift the Wildcats to a 62-60 victory over No. 1 seed Ohio State in the East regional semifinals.  Josh Harrellson held his own against Ohio State super freshman Jared Sullinger, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
