Jaxon Kohler Chooses BYU Over Kentucky

Michigan State transfer Jaxon Kohler has committed to BYU after narrowing his final choices to the Cougars and Kentucky. The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds last season and had been pursued by Mark Pope as a possible addition for Kentucky’s final roster spot. His decision leaves the Wildcats still searching for one more piece as preseason approaches.

Why it matters: Kohler had a clearer eligibility path than some other fifth-year candidates, so his decision increases the importance of Kentucky’s remaining options, particularly Mark Mitchell.

Kentucky Adds Texas Tech Exhibition at Rupp Arena

Kentucky will host Texas Tech in a preseason exhibition on Friday, Oct. 23, at Rupp Arena. The matchup gives Mark Pope’s Wildcats another high-level tuneup before the regular season, joining the already announced Oct. 16 exhibition against Little Rock. UK Athletics had previously indicated that additional exhibitions were still to be announced.

Why it matters: Texas Tech should provide a substantially stronger early test than a traditional exhibition opponent and gives Kentucky another opportunity to evaluate its rotation against major-conference competition.

Mark Mitchell Eligibility Ruling Remains Imminent

A decision is still expected from Jefferson Circuit Judge Brian C. Edwards in the eligibility case involving former Missouri forward Mark Mitchell and other Class of 2022 athletes seeking a fifth season. Major-conference commissioners, including SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, have opposed broader relief that could allow affected players another year of competition and additional transfer opportunities. Mitchell remains strongly connected to Kentucky if he becomes eligible and is permitted to enter the portal.

Why it matters: With Kohler now headed to BYU, Mitchell becomes an even more consequential possibility for Kentucky’s open roster spot.

Kentucky Season-Ticket Renewal Deadline Arrives Today

Friday, Aug. 21, is the final renewal deadline for Kentucky men’s basketball season-ticket holders for the 2026-27 season. UK Athletics is also operating a lottery for a limited number of new upper-level season tickets, while some lower-level opportunities remain tied to K Fund pledge commitments.
The home schedule includes Louisville, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas and Auburn, along with a growing slate of preseason exhibitions.

Jodie Meeks Celebrates His 39th Birthday

Former Kentucky guard Jodie Meeks was born Aug. 21, 1987, and turns 39 today. Meeks starred for Kentucky from 2006-07 through 2008-09, highlighted by his explosive junior season before beginning a 10-year NBA career. He later moved into coaching after his playing career.

Wildcat World angle: Meeks remains one of the signature scorers of Kentucky’s late-2000s era.
