Irvine Jeffries

Irvine Jeffries was born Irvine Franklin Jeffries on September 10, 1905, in Louisville, Kentucky. A gifted all-around athlete, he starred in basketball, football, baseball and track at DuPont Manual High School. Jeffries produced one of the most dramatic moments in Kentucky high school basketball history during Manual’s run to the 1925 state championship. After making a field goal that tied an early-round game against Pikeville, he was fouled as time expired and sank both free throws to give Manual a 21-19 victory. The Crimsons went on to capture the state title with a 40-11 victory over Winchester. Jeffries also attracted considerable interest as a baseball player before choosing to continue his education and athletic career at the University of Kentucky.

Jeffries joined Kentucky’s freshman teams during the 1926-27 academic year. On the basketball court, he became one of the leading players for the freshman squad, commonly known as the Kittens. In a game against his former Manual teammates in Louisville, he reportedly scored 15 points in approximately five minutes as Kentucky’s freshmen won 28-16. He was equally dangerous on the football field, playing quarterback and breaking loose for a 55-yard touchdown run against Vanderbilt’s freshmen. His speed, elusiveness and scoring ability made him one of Kentucky’s most anticipated varsity prospects.

Jeffries did not enroll for the opening portion of the 1927-28 season, but returned to school in January and immediately became the Wildcats’ leading offensive threat under first-year head coach John Mauer. Making his varsity debut against Tennessee on January 28, Jeffries scored a career-high 22 points in Kentucky’s 48-18 victory at Alumni Gymnasium. He later scored 15 points in a 54-29 win at Vanderbilt, where his performance reportedly earned him a standing ovation from the opposing crowd when he fouled out. Despite appearing in only 10 games, Jeffries led Kentucky with an average of 11.5 points per game, scoring 115 points as the Wildcats completed a 12-6 season.

Kentucky advanced to the semifinals of the 1928 Southern Conference Tournament in Atlanta. Jeffries scored 11 points as the Wildcats defeated South Carolina 56-40 in the opening round and helped them eliminate Georgia 33-16 in the quarterfinals. He then scored a team-high 14 points against Mississippi, but the Wildcats fell 41-28 to the eventual tournament champion. That proved to be his final game for Kentucky. Jeffries left the university after his sophomore year to pursue professional baseball, ending a brief basketball career in which he had demonstrated exceptional scoring ability and athletic versatility.

Jeffries reached the major leagues with the Chicago White Sox, making his debut on April 30, 1930. He appeared for Chicago in 1930 and 1931 and returned to the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1934. Over 175 major-league games, Jeffries recorded 116 hits, eight home runs and 46 runs batted in while batting .234. He continued playing in the minor leagues after his final major-league season, including time with the Portland Beavers and Fort Worth Cats, and later worked as a minor-league manager and White Sox scout. He also played professional football with the Frankfort Yellow Jackets and remained involved in Louisville athletics after his playing career. Following a long illness, Jeffries died on June 8, 1982, in Louisville at age 76. Although his Kentucky basketball career lasted only 10 games, his accomplishments at Manual, Kentucky and in professional baseball established him as one of Louisville’s most versatile athletes of his generation.
