Kentucky Creates “Media Madness” Event for September 17
Mark Pope and Kentucky are adding a new preseason wrinkle with “Media Madness,” an event scheduled for September 17 that will put local media members through drills, scrimmages and even a mock press conference conducted by the players. The event is another example of Pope’s effort to make the program more accessible during an offseason without an overseas exhibition tour.
Kentucky’s 2026-27 Schedule Now Shows a 15-Game Nonconference Slate
With Wichita State officially added, Kentucky’s published schedule now stretches from an October 16 exhibition against Little Rock through a December 28 home date with Gardner-Webb before SEC play begins January 2 at Oklahoma. The Wildcats will face Kansas, Indiana, Virginia, Louisville and North Carolina away from the normal Rupp Arena home slate, giving Mark Pope several major tests before conference play.
Kentucky’s Home Nonconference Schedule Draws Scrutiny
The Lexington Herald-Leader examined Kentucky’s completed home nonconference schedule Tuesday and concluded that Wichita State gives the Rupp Arena slate a badly needed recognizable opponent beyond Louisville. The Wildcats will also host Manhattan, James Madison, Northern Arizona, Grambling State, Appalachian State, Bryant, Sacred Heart and Gardner-Webb, while many of the marquee games are being played at neutral sites or on the road.
Pope Keeps Kentucky Visible During an Otherwise Quiet August
With no foreign exhibition trip this summer, Kentucky has leaned heavily into behind-the-scenes video, player features, fan interaction and social-media content. Pope has participated in Q&A sessions and ticket giveaways while the program has offered glimpses of summer workouts and team activities, an increasingly deliberate effort to maintain a connection with Big Blue Nation before preseason practice begins.
August 18 Belongs to “Sky” Walker and Willie Cauley-Stein
Two memorable Kentucky big men share an August 18 birthday. Kenny “Sky” Walker, born in 1964, became a consensus first-team All-American and two-time SEC Player of the Year before the New York Knicks selected him fifth overall in the 1986 NBA Draft; Willie Cauley-Stein, born in 1993, later became one of the signature defensive players of Kentucky’s 38-1 Final Four team. Kentucky’s Polk Threlkeld, a member of the 1909-10 Wildcats, was also born on this date.
