Kentucky Sets Zoom Meeting with Michigan State Transfer Jaxon Kohler

Kentucky is scheduled to meet Wednesday by Zoom with Michigan State transfer Jaxon Kohler, who entered the portal after receiving a temporary restraining order against the NCAA. The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds last season while shooting 38.9 percent from three-point range. Kentucky continues to pursue options for its final roster spot while awaiting developments in the Mark Mitchell eligibility case.

Why it matters: Kohler gives Mark Pope a legitimate alternative if Kentucky is unable to add Mitchell, and his combination of size, rebounding and perimeter shooting fits Pope’s preferred frontcourt style.

Mark Mitchell Eligibility Decision Moves Closer

The Aug. 18 deadline has passed for Mark Mitchell’s attorneys and the NCAA to submit additional arguments in his Jefferson Circuit Court eligibility case. Judge Brian C. Edwards indicated after the Aug. 14 hearing that he expects to rule by the end of this week on whether Mitchell and other players from the 2022 recruiting class can seek another season of college eligibility. Mitchell remains strongly connected to Kentucky if he receives relief allowing him to enter the transfer portal.

Why it matters: The ruling could determine whether Kentucky lands its preferred choice for the final scholarship on the 2026-27 roster.

Kentucky Falls Off Darius Wabbington’s Visit List

Five-star 2027 center Darius Wabbington no longer appears headed for a fall visit to Kentucky. The 6-foot-11 prospect had been considering a Lexington trip, but his updated visit schedule instead includes Indiana, Louisville, Arizona, Texas, Illinois and North Carolina. Kentucky has already secured a commitment from five-star wing Ryan Hampton and continues to recruit a deep group of 2027 prospects.

Why it matters: Wabbington had been one of Kentucky’s most prominent frontcourt targets in the 2027 class, so Pope and his staff will now have to concentrate their efforts elsewhere on a recruiting board that remains extensive.

Former Wildcat Al Robinson Dies at 88

Former Kentucky player Alford Merritt “Al” Robinson died Tuesday, Aug. 18, at age 88. The Lexington native played for Adolph Rupp at Kentucky and remained closely connected to the program long after his playing days ended. His obituary notes that Robinson regarded being selected to play for Kentucky as the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.

Wildcat World angle: Robinson’s passing is another reminder that Kentucky basketball history extends well beyond stars and record holders; generations of Wildcats who played supporting roles helped build and preserve the program’s tradition.

Three Wildcats Share an August 19 Birthday

Walter’s Wildcat World records Pat Campbell, Hugh Coy and Zvonimir Ivisic among the Kentucky players born on Aug. 19. Campbell, a Lexington native born in 1897, played forward for Kentucky during the 1916-17 and 1917-18 seasons, while Coy later lettered for Adolph Rupp’s unbeaten 1953-54 Wildcats and Ivisic represented Kentucky during the 2023-24 season.

Wildcat World angle: The three birthdays span more than a century of Kentucky basketball history, from the program’s earliest decades through the modern era.
