Bart Peak was born Bart Nixon Peak on January 13, 1894, in Bedford, Kentucky, to George W. Peak and Mary Alice Peak. A 5-foot-6 guard from La Grange, Kentucky, Peak attended Kentucky State College (now the University of Kentucky), where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1917. During his collegiate career, he played varsity basketball and football, later served as manager of the basketball team, and emerged as one of the university’s most active student leaders. He was president of the University YMCA, sophomore class president, treasurer of the History Club, assistant editor of The Kentucky Kernel, and a member of Alpha Tau Omega, Mystic Thirteen, and Lamp and Cross. Contemporary university publications described him as a respected campus leader with a promising future.
Following graduation, Peak enlisted in the United States Army during World War I and attained the rank of second lieutenant. After his military service, he attended the YMCA Graduate School at Vanderbilt University before returning to Kentucky, where he served as general secretary of the University of Kentucky YMCA for 37 years. Although he earned a law degree from the University of Kentucky in 1930, he never entered private practice, instead dedicating his career to education, public service, and civic leadership.
Peak entered elected office after decades of service to the university and community. He served three terms in the Kentucky House of Representatives, two terms as Fayette County judge, and later on Lexington’s first Urban County Council. Often called the legislative father of Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, he helped sponsor the legislation that paved the way for the city’s merged government. During his tenure as county judge, he helped establish a home for delinquent children, converted a former tuberculosis hospital into the Julius Marks Home for the elderly, reorganized the county’s children’s bureau, remodeled the courthouse, and supported construction of new public facilities.
A devoted civic leader, Peak became known as “Mr. Rotary” for his decades of service to Rotary International, serving as president of the Lexington Rotary Club and four terms as president of Rotary District 674. He also led numerous charitable and professional organizations, including the Kentucky Society for Crippled Children, the Kentucky County Judge Association, the Southern Student YMCA Secretaries Association, and the Community Chest, now known as United Way. He taught Sunday school for 50 years at First United Methodist Church in Lexington and spent 24 years as a basketball and football official. Bart Peak died on February 27, 1981, at the age of 87, leaving a legacy that extended far beyond athletics through a lifetime of leadership, public service, and dedication to the University of Kentucky and the Commonwealth.
