Coppin State faces tall task in clash with Kentucky

Coppin State

The 11th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats continue to prepare for the start of SEC play, and they will host the Coppin State Eagles of the MEAC this evening. Coppin State has suffered back-to-back losses to fall to 4-5 overall, including 0-5 in true road games. After a respectable 12-point road loss to Connecticut last week, the Eagles were manhandled by Wisconsin on Thursday, falling by an 80-56 final. They have played one MEAC game to date, and that ended in a six-point loss to Morgan State.

Brandon Knight has the look of a leader

Talking more. Leading more. Kentucky Coach John Calipari sees those trends in Brandon Knight. “You’re seeing a point guard, right before your eyes, starting to mature,” Calipari said of Knight on Monday. Throughout the early season, Calipari has sought more vocal leadership from Knight, a quiet, thoughtful player not given to histrionics.

Doron Lamb named Dick Vitale’s Diaper Dandy of the Week

Doron Lamb

Lamb, a 6-4 guard from Queens, N.Y., scored 32 points in leading the Wildcats to a win over Winthrop. He went 11-of-12 from the field, making 7-of-8 3-pointers to break Kentucky’s freshman record of 31 points set by Jamal Mashburn on Feb. 3, 1991, against Georgia. It marks the third time that Lamb has scored at least 20 points in a game this year. He set career highs for points, field goals and 3-pointers. Lamb’s seven 3-pointers are tied for the most by a Southeastern Conference player this season.

Kentucky offers 2012 shooting guard Archie Goodwin

Archie Goodwin and Rod Strickland

Sylvan Hills 6-foot-3 guard Archie Goodwin, seen here talking to Kentucky’s Rod Strickland, is considered one of the nation’s top prospects for the Class of 2012 and has the scholarship offers to show for it. Rivals.com rates Goodwin a 5-star recruit, and Arkansas Wings’ Ron Crawford says Goodwin will be the state’s most highly recruited player since Little Rock Central product and NBA All-Star Joe Johnson. Goodwin said he appreciates the accolades coming his way but admits he can’t spend too much time thinking about it.

Doron Lamb anything but a bench player

Technically speaking, Doron Lamb is a bench player, in the sense that he begins the game with his warmups on as five other UK players step on the floor for tipoff. But there’s nothing about his game that says he’s a benchwarmer. Lamb, who set the UK freshman record with 32 points Wednesday in a win against Winthrop, is averaging 14.2 points in 28.1 minutes. And he’s become the master of coming off the bench.

Doron Lamb’s record night leads Kentucky past Winthrop, 89-52

Doron Lamb set a Kentucky record for most points by a freshman, scoring 32 as the 13th-ranked Wildcats rolled by Winthrop 89-52 on Wednesday. Lamb broke the record of 31 set by Jamal Mashburn on Feb. 3, 1991 against Georgia on a nifty layup that put the Wildcats up by 28 with 6:38 remaining. He walked off to a standing ovation moments later after making 11 of 12 field goals, including 7 of 8 3-pointers.
