Kentucky Wildcats’ turnaround started with a long look in the mirror

For the first time this season after failing to meet regular-season expectations, Kentucky Coach John Calipari admitted that he too bought into the hype.

The T-shirts of the dream, the talk of perfection, the flirtation with 40-0 — Kentucky’s John Calipari was a victim of the expectations as well.

For the first time this season after dealing with the maddening aftereffects of failing to meet regular-season expectations, Coach Cal admitted that he too bought into the hype.

“I had to accept that, too, now,” Coach Cal said Sunday after his Wildcats pulled off another memorable victory, a 75-72 win over Michigan in the Elite Eight. “I started reading what everybody was writing. I’m thinking: This is going to be easy.”

Easy? This year might have been Calipari’s toughest.

On February 18, 1903, State College (Kentucky) records its first win, an 11-10 decision over Lexington YMCA. The Wildcats finished that first season with a 1-2 record.

 

On February 18, 1909, with a 28-23 win over Cincinnati, Kentucky clinched its first winning season in school history. Following a “Senior Day” loss to Central University, the Wildcats ended the year with a 5-4 record.

 

On February 18, 1950, Bill Spivey scored 40 points against Georgia Tech.
