Kentucky basketball season ends with loss to Mississippi State in SEC Tournament opener

Kentucky had their season come to an end with a dramatic 74-73 loss to Mississippi State in the second round of the SEC Tournament.

Kentucky basketball’s season of misery is finished.

Dontaie Allen was unable to finish the rally from a 15-point deficit as his 3 on the final possession bounced off the rim and Kentucky bowed out of the SEC Tournament with a 74-73 loss to Mississippi State.

Allen, who scored 23 points in Kentucky’s double-overtime win at Mississippi State on January 2, erupted for 20 points in the second half. He finished the game with 23 points, hitting 6 of 13 3-point attempts.

The two Mississippi State games are the only times Allen has scored more than 14 points in a game all season.

Kentucky finishes the 2020-21 season with a 9-16 record, its first losing record since 1988-89 and its worst winning percentage since 1926-27.

On April 7, 2014, Kentucky sparks an exciting run to the national championship game with five freshman starters. UK, playing as an eight seed, knocks off four straight top-five seeds all by five points or less to become the first team to win five games in an NCAA Tournament by such a small margin. Freshman sharpshooter Aaron Harrison hits the game-winning 3-pointer in successive victories over Louisville, Michigan and Wisconsin in the final minute of play of each contest. UK eventually loses to UConn in the title game by a 60-54 score.
