On Aug. 26, 1983, Kentucky guard Dicky Beal underwent arthroscopic knee surgery, the third operation of his career. The setback cost Beal Kentucky’s preseason conditioning program, but he recovered to play a pivotal role as a senior on the Wildcats’ 1983-84 Final Four team and was named MVP of the NCAA Mideast Regional.
Remembering Lou Tsioropoulos, Champion Wildcat and Celtic
Eleven years ago today, Kentucky announced the death of former Wildcat great Lou Tsioropoulos, who had died Aug. 22, 2015, at age 84. Tsioropoulos helped Kentucky win the 1951 NCAA championship and later starred on the Wildcats’ unbeaten 25-0 team in 1953-54 before winning two NBA championships with the Boston Celtics. His No. 16 jersey hangs in the Rupp Arena rafters.
