George Zerfoss was born George Ernest Zerfoss on April 11, 1897, in Bedford, Kentucky, to Louis Franklin Zerfoss and Elizabeth Peake Zerfoss.  His brother Karl was captain of the 1916 Kentucky basketball team and his brother Tom also participated in varsity athletics at Kentucky.

Zerfoss spent his boyhood and youth in Lexington, where his father was prominent for his work in the YMCA. His mother, the late Elizabeth Peak Zerfoss, was a sister of D.H. Peak, former business manager of the University of Kentucky.

Zerfoss went on to captain Kentucky’s basketball and baseball team in 1919.  He also played football and was a member of Phi Delta Theta, a national social fraternity.  He was a popular student as he was elected president of his junior class.  He was a 1920 mechanical engineering graduate of Kentucky. He also held a master’s degree in agriculture engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and he was a research engineer with the TVA at Knoxville, Tennessee.

George Zerfoss passed away on August 28, 1950, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 53.
