The Southeastern Conference named Kentucky’s Terrence Jones as the league’s Freshman of the Week. Jones scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in UK’s season-opening victory over East Tennessee State on Friday. The SEC named Vanderbilt guard Brad Tinsley as its Player of the Week. Tinsley had Vandy’s first triple-double: 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a victory over Presbyterian.

The University of Kentucky plans to appeal a NCAA ruling that freshman Enes Kanter is permanently ineligible, the school announced Thursday. A sign that there had been a decision in the case came earlier Thursday when Kanter was seen wearing practice gear and headed for Kentucky’s practice court.
Kentucky basketball adds four for 2011
UK head coach John Calipari is well on his way to a third-straight top-ranked recruiting class after announcing the signings of Anthony Davis, Michael Gilchrist, Marquis Teague and Kyle Wiltjer to National Letters of Intent. “These are not just terrific basketball players, but they’re terrific students and terrific people as well,” Calipari said. “Most importantly, they all have an unbelievable attitude about winning; they all wanted to play together knowing they’re going to have to sacrifice a little bit of their game for their teammates. With this group, it adds to what we already have within our program. These are four of the best, which is what we want to recruit here.”
Big things expected from Michael Gilchrist
Michael Gilchrist will sign a National Letter of Intent this week to play for Kentucky coach John Calipari beginning in 2011. But for the next year, Kevin Boyle of St. Patrick remains Gilchrist’s coach. And Boyle is expecting continued growth from his 6-foot-7 star who averaged 16.4 points and 11.5 rebounds as a junior.
