Kentucky ‘needed’ a win and got it against Alabama

For a Kentucky team in so desperate need of a win – perhaps for confidence more than anything – John Calipari didn’t care how his team got there.

The offense was once again stagnant and the shots still weren’t falling.

But for a team in so desperate need of a win – perhaps for confidence more than anything – John Calipari didn’t care how his team got there. All that mattered was Kentucky won Tuesday on Senior Night at Rupp Arena, sending seniors Jarrod Polson and Jon Hood out with a 55-48 victory while snapping a two-game skid.

“At the end of the day, you and I know we just had to win this game,” Coach Cal said. “Didn’t matter the score. Could have been a half-court bank shot. We have to keep building.”

On February 18, 1903, State College (Kentucky) records its first win, an 11-10 decision over Lexington YMCA. The Wildcats finished that first season with a 1-2 record.

 

On February 18, 1909, with a 28-23 win over Cincinnati, Kentucky clinched its first winning season in school history. Following a “Senior Day” loss to Central University, the Wildcats ended the year with a 5-4 record.

 

On February 18, 1950, Bill Spivey scored 40 points against Georgia Tech.
